and 1 more Thing # Internet Resource Final!

Internet resource final

Reflect on and describe five constructs/concepts/principles/strategies gained from this course (explaining each accurately and clearly, and then describing how they will inform/affect/change your professional practice.

1.    WebQuests are one technology construct I am taking away from this course and utilizing in the classroom. I am excited to be using a learning platform based in inquiry learning where most of the information the reader accesses and learns from is online.  Webquests are almost completely web based, and the learning activity connected with the web quest is usually an authentic, real world task. I was unaware of this web 2.0 tool even though it has been around for a number of years now. I am now more informed on the construction and implementation of a webquest to use with my students. I believe using this tool will strengthen the cohesiveness of my lesson plans and units with tasks that implore the students to independently choose a topic, ask questions, evaluate sources, think critically, summarize and present research or projects. My students will have more motivation for learning using this tool because it is challenging yet creative.

2.    Behold the revitalizing of the Wiki!  Revitalize only because I found so many dead or dying Wikis.  I am definitely going to use this strategy in my classroom. Developing a Wiki page is easier than I ever imagined it would be. The most important part is keeping it alive and relevant. Wikis are similar to document collaboration tools such as Microsoft word or Google docs but instead of being private, this platform is published on the web for easier access. Wikis are easily shared and collaborated with among students and teachers. Anyone can register and keeping track of what has been added and changed helps keep a system of checks and balances, or accountability. I plan to have my students use Wikis in the classroom from now on.

3.    Internet safety is of the utmost importance in today’s vast technological world, especially since most teachers now employ curriculums that incorporate the internet and the tools found on them. I was pleased to learn about the importance and management of web safety through this course. It is definitely important to have more than just the common and basic signature form to promote and provide internet safety. There are actually models and games students can use to promote safety. Investigative role playing is one of these models I learned about. The idea is to have student’s research websites and discover which one is false, or a hoax website. Students need to be tech savvy and constantly thinking critically to stay above the reaches of the criminal cyber mind.  Having an array of activities to keep kids on their toes is very important. I have learned how to do more than is required by districts by taking this course.

4.    How to create social media platform is a concept I learned through this course from the book study by Michael Hyatt: Platform, Getting Noticed in a Noisy World. In this book Hyatt outlines the process on how to become an influence online, becoming an effective online presence and having your voice heard. But being heard on social media platforms isn’t easy, in fact, it’s very difficult to reach out and land the presence you intend. Hyatt introduces several methods to get your voice heard by using these platforms. It is imperative to scaffold and slowly build your students into using these platforms in the classroom. Hyatt advises to create a compelling story as the first crucial directive. Start with a Wow factor on your platform. Something intriguing and not mundane. Keeping students attention and enthusiasm in building good platform for learning is imperative. Leaning how to build, how often to post, using key words are all part of Hyatt’s plan to create and maintain a successful, informative social media platform to use in the confines of the classroom for educational learning purposes.

5.    Presentation and Assessment tools equally important tools that I have discovered taking this course. I was introduced to a multitude of new tools for presentation and assessment. My favorite new presentation tool is definitely Prezi. I had a brief experience with Prezi in the past but I never actually experience the power of the tool until this year. Prezi is more than a PowerPoint slide because if allows you to better capture the attention of your students or audience members. It is also a great resource tool for students to use to present their projects. The newest assessment tool that I like is Socrative. This tool allows teachers to create polls, tests, quizzes or other exercises to check for assessment. The best part is that students can use their smartphones. This makes learning more fun because students can incorporate their cell devices into the classroom. Thanks to these new tools, I will make my classroom a fun, learning environment.

Thing #16 Evaluation

Evaluation time for my 16 Things!

Photopeach is a website that allows you to tell your stories with photos. You can create a neat slideshow with ease incorporating music, captions and comments so you can elaborate on your story even more. Photpeach also has a premium upgrade for educators to use. Teachers can create and mange students accounts for a class or even an entire school. With a class premium account you can mange privicy controls, sharing and other features built in. It is also ad-free which is nice.

What were your favorite discoveries or exercise on this learning journey?
I think my favorite discoveries have been all the assessment tools and number of different websites and applications I can use. I really like the Quizlet Flash Cards for your smartphone. My least favorite was the school tube.

How has this type of program assisted or affected your lifelong learning goals?
My learning goals were affected in a positive manner in that I can take what I learned and implement these tools into my classroom to help my students learn while having fun and doing so at their own pace.

Were there any takeaways or unexpected outcomes from the exercise that surprised you?
I didn't expect there to be so many different resources/websites to account for the same premise. For example, Skype. There are so many more alternatives to use to communicate other than Skype. So many resources to use with technology in the classroom that I wasn't aware of. Kudos!

What could I do differently to improve upon this programs format or concept?
I don't think the program needs anything different. I would just keep up with the changes in the resources/websites that are included. I know a lot of the wikis are gone or going away and platforms and sites that existed a few months ago change, fold, or get sold. Keeping up with technology is always a task! Cheers!

Think #15 Skype

Skype

Surely by now in 2018 everyone has herd of or used Skype. Skype is a telecommunication software and video audio calling application, it can be used across the globe using internet connection to contact people. It can also be used to call as a cell phone would for a small fee, but for the most part if an internet connection is established and both users have an account then chat is free. In the phone and laptop apps you can also live text chat with your friends. Skype no has applications for every device.

I feel that Skype is very useful in the classroom. Teachers and educators around the world can connect with a basic account for free. Skype will allow them to share lessons, tutor, collaborate and present quest speakers who might not normally be able to present to that participial class. Teachers can also join the Skype community to gain access to thousands of resources to make their lesson plans or classroom itself more interactive with modern technological advancements. Skype in the classroom is an online community that enables thousand of teaches to inspire the next generation of global citizens through exciting learning experiences learning through Skype.

Thing #14 Podcasting

Podcasting

Podcasts are a great non musical audio way to learn about topic areas or methods of study. The great thing about podcasts is they can be used on the move and many people use them due to that.  I often listen to podcasts when driving, walking, or working out as they are a great way to stay up on current events or learn more about different subjects and areas of interest.

One of the multimedia subjects i picked out this week on the discovery exercise for Texas Education on iTunes U was a podcast on the State of the Gulf by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. This podcast exposes the gulf in a manner much greater than it being the simple sum of the parts along the shorelines of 5 different states and 3 countries. The podcast talks about everything from illegal fishing to climate change. There is also a podcast on action for saving the oceans from our pollution.

I also found an interesting podcast about discovering the heritage on the Texas frontiersmen by the institute of Texan cultures. It speaks about discovery of heritage and the buffalo solders, their lives, and the lives of their descendant. For more information about this subject you can visit Texan Cultures at www.texancultures.com

Thing #13 SchoolTube

SchoolTube

I am not a big fan of this website. It is not easy to navigate and finding anything relevant is few and far between. I don't have a lot to say about SchoolTube other than it stinks. There are too many ads and the video and audio quality are poor. I will stick to YouTube.

Thing #12 Discovering and Using YouTube

YouTube

You Tube is the go to site for watching videos of all sorts and collections. Subscribe or view videos, clips, TV shows, music videos, short and doc films, audio recordings, video blogging, movie trailers, educational videos and the list goes on. If there is every anything you need to know or learn how to do, there is most likely a video on the you tube that will show you how. The very 1st promoted video I found was this one below. I can't for the life of me understand why this yahoo has 61 million subscribers. If you have time to waste check it out but beware, I warned you.

A complete waste of time on YouTube here:

Some of the more interesting content and facts. Did you know that google purchased YouTube from 3 creators who had previously worked for PayPal? The three amigos put the site up and running in February of 2005 and sold it the next year to google for 1.6 billion. I wonder what they would have been offered by google a few years later? Amazing. I did find some good educational videos that would be helpful in the classroom. For my social studies 6th grade class I would use this animated series call Libery's Kids to help expore different periods in American History.

Thing #11 Discovering Presentation Tools

Presentation Tools Prezi.  Prezi is a very popular presentation tool that surpasses the typical boring yesterday power point slides. Slides box you in, prezi gives you a seemingly limitless canvis to illustrate your project from the big picture down to the fine details. The added depth, content, and detail of prezi presentations will resonate with your audience and be remembered.

I used the free educator version and picked out a templete. I've taken the background from a previous vector map that also had the US as a focus. I simply copied the world background and pasted it into a new prezi. Go to the downloadable prezis in the share tab and you should be able to find a templete just for you. The best part about prezi is the options are almost endless. You can add audio, video clips and even create animations shorts to go with your content. The selection of transitions is dynamic! The only downfall I found was the browser issue with google, for some reason prezi does not operate well in google chrome. I suggest using firfox or explorer/edge. Click on the link below to sample my Geography prezi for 8th grade.

Thing #10 Discovering Animation Tools

Animation Tools Powtoon is a website you can use to create pretty cool animated videos and presentations free of charge for the basic plan. Video and interactive sites are growing rapidly on the internet. From marketing and organization training, to HR and education this site is able to support any solution to your video making needs. The site is easy to navigate and there are several different levels to choose from.

You can start from scratch or create a video using a created template. I chose a pre-fabricated template over an assignment with the mission impossible theme. You can watch it by clicking Here! Getting into more detailed video or presentations can become cumbersome but they provide helpful learning videos to get you going. Overall I give this site an A. Enjoy!

Thing #9 Online Productivity Tools

Online Productivity Tools such as Zoho Docs and Google Docs are mostly free online cloud and software websites utilized to organize you or your organization fitting your needs in one website. You can store things online here, from documents to images, spread sheets to presentations, even much, movies and pictures. Of course all this storage comes with a fee after 5 GB of free space are taken. Some of the features I like on Zoho.com are the virtual drive- eliminating the flash drive or hard drive backup of important information. Size doesn't matter as far as importing files. Zoho virtual drive can upload all file types and you can transfer entire folders and sub-folders without scrambling the contents. I used the storage feature to upload a folder with pictures to enjoy here.

Another feature of this docs site I am fond of is the preventive steps they take to thwart data leaks. Having your personal documents online for the jackers and hackers to break into would be no bueno. With this feature you can customize your reports, find any file, and oversee data spread in the charts such as the one below.
